IPAF is the most widely recognised accreditations within Powered Access Training or MEWPs as they are known – Mobile Elevating Work Platforms.
IPAF Operator courses are normally a 1 day course, on completion the operator will receive a PAL Card, which is valid for 5 years. Showing the delegates photo, categories covered and expiry date. All the PAL cards supplied by us are the new chip & pin PAL cards.
Minimum age for delegates is 16.
Global Skill Solutions run IPAF training courses most week days & weekends at our training centre in Haydock, St Helens. We also offer National Coverage – taking the headache out of booking several operators scattered around the country.
As well as the normal 3a (Mobile Scissor Lift) & 3b (Mobile Boom or Cherry Picker) training, Global Skill Solutions also offer the MEWP specific, half day Harness Course, and also the MEWP For Managers Course – details of these courses are below.

3a – Mobile Scissor Lift
3b – Mobile Cherry Picker or Boom
3a – Mobile Scissor Lift. The machine can be operated up/down & forward/backwards from within the basket.
3b – Mobile Cherry Picker, also known as a Boom. The 3b machine can be driven from within the basket whilst working at height.
1b – Static Boom / Cherry Picker
PAV – Push Around Vertical – or POP-UP
1b – Static Boom (Cherry Picker). This machine can be either a Van Mount, Trailer Mount or Spider Type Boom. They are moved into position, and outriggers are deployed, the machine can then be operated from the basket, but cannot be driven in any direction. Normally small, compact Cherry Pickers.
The PAV is a small scissor lift that has no drive, it’s basically pushed into place and can then be operated up/down. Sometimes called a POPUP. The PAV course on it’s own is a half day course, however, if the operator already has the 3a category, then it’s just a familiarisation course.
Management Training – MEWPs For Managers
A mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs) for managers training course aimed at enabling supervisors and managers to prepare for and safely coordinate various types of MEWPs on site.
IPAF Harness Course
To give delegates knowledge of relevant Regulations, Codes of Practice and good safe working practices along with hands-on practical skills to enable them to safely use safety harness and safety lanyards whilst using mobile powered access equipment.
